Belmont Residences up for 2021 Georgie Awards

Our Belmont Residences project is back in the news!  We’re excited to share that The Canadian Home Builders’ Association recently announced their 2021 Georgie Awards finalists. RLA’s Belmont Residences is up for two more awards, Residential Community of the Year and Best Multi-Family Kitchen!

The project was recently awarded “Best New Condo Development” of the Greater Victoria Area by Victoria News Group in the fall of 2019.

Belmont is a new master planned community consisting of commercial, mixed-use and multi-family residential buildings.  RLA has continued its strong relationship with the Belmont team, working to further develop the residential portion of the master planned community.

Throughout the project, the design mixes contemporary and traditional forms.  Pictured above, Belmont Residences West uses traditional sloped roofs with flat roof to create a unique character.  At the buildings center, radial heavy timber columns and a large stone wall accentuate the buildings entrance while wood-like slats conceal the balcony edges to increase privacy for residents.  Here, masonry is used here to pronounce key buildings forms.

The Crossing buildings use more contemporary forms. The commercial base is strongly pronounced by using light stone and large overhangs, announcing stores and restaurant entrances (cover photo).  Seen from the plaza (last photo), our goal was to create a warm and inviting space for the community to congregate, shop locally and engage with their neighbours.  Wood is used to accent the corner of the buildings, to soften the overall contemporary form and to reference the historical West Coast tradition of using wood in our buildings.

Lastly, Belmont Residences East picks up on the use of wood, like that of its sister West building.  Sloped roofs are matched with flat roofs mixing modern and traditional forms.  The buildings anticipated lush foliage and outdoor patio space back onto the Galloping Goose Trail, a major amenity in the greater Victoria area and common commuter trail to downtown Victoria.
